Like after every war in Israel, the IDF reviews the entire war for lessons and in some cases, will give awards for excellence to those soldiers who acted with great bravery and sacrifice. Two of our two members received this incredible award this week. Below are their stories.
Matania Meguri (Right) and Sergio Alverav (Left)
On July 21st, 2014, Matania and and his team who were part of a special unit of the Paratroopers brigade received a mission to go to capture a building that Hamas was using. As they approached the building, they came under massive fire from terrorists. Scores of IDF officers and soldiers were immediately injured, including Matania. Even though he was injured, Matania continued fighting off the terrorists until the las soldier was evacuated from the area.
Sergio, who is from Venezuela, served as a lone soldier in the IDF. On July 27th, 2014, while soldiers were searching a building in Gaza, two large explosions shook the building and caused it to collapse. Many soldiers were injured. Without hesitation or waiting for orders, Sergio took leadership and lead his injured brothers out of the building to a safe position. During the evacuation, Sergio was shot in the leg, and even while injured Sergio continued the rescue until the last soldier was safe.
Sergio and Matania were together on our delegation to Johannesburg a few months ago. We are incredibly proud to have them counted amongst our members.
Shabbat Shalom from Israel,
P.S. I”m especially proud of as both Matania and Sergio are from the Paratroopers – my unit!
