June 26, 2015

Dear Friends,

I would like to dedicate this week’s update to a true hero who grew amongst us, a man of might and bravery.  In Israel we grew up on the stories of his heroism and on the values he instilled in our people. This man is no longer with us.  This upcoming week is the anniversary of his death.

On June 27th, 1976, a French aircraft took off from Ben Gurion Airport on the way to France. The plain was hijacked by terrorists and landed in Entebe, Uganda.  3 days later, the terrorists selected and released all the non-Jewish passengers.

On Saturday July 3rd, three Israeli airplanes that carried equipment and the best of our fighters from the Sayeret Matkal unit under the command of Yoni Netanyahu took off from Tel Aviv.  Only when the airplanes made half of their way to Uganda did Prime Minister Itzhak Rabin approve the operation. Under Yoni’s command the team was able to save the hostages, however, Yoni was shot during the rescue and later died from his wounds.

This operation is a milestone in the history of the State of Israel and in the history of the entire Jewish Nation. The State of Israel sent the best among its fighters thousands of miles away to save the hostages, and each and every Jew in the world now knew that The State of Israel will keep him and his children safe, no matter what.

During his life, Yoni used to write letters to his family and friends. These letters were published after his death in a book called “The Letters of Jonathan Netanyahu”. One of the most famous quotes from this book is:

“There is no other army like ours! An army that seeks peace and not war, but an army no one can stand up to, if it has to fight”.

Everyone of us knows the reason we fought is to be safe in our land, so that our children will not have to fight again.

Shabbat Shalom from Israel,
